Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our services

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world — around 434,000 people are diagnosed each year. We recommend a full-body skin check at least once a year for most adults. If you have fair skin, a history of sun exposure, a family history of skin cancer, or many moles, more frequent checks (every 6 months) may be advised. Early detection dramatically improves treatment outcomes.

No referral is needed. Dr Gilani is a GP with advanced training in skin cancer medicine, so you can book directly with our clinic. If you do have a referral from another doctor, please bring it along as it may assist with your Medicare rebate for specialist-level consultations.

We offer bulk billing for eligible Medicare card holders for standard GP consultations. Skin cancer checks, procedures, and some extended consultations may attract an out-of-pocket fee. Please call our clinic ahead of your appointment so we can advise you on any expected costs based on your specific needs.

A full skin check takes around 20–30 minutes. You'll be asked to undress to your underwear so Dr Gilani can examine your skin from head to toe using a dermatoscope — a handheld device that magnifies and illuminates the skin to detect abnormalities invisible to the naked eye. Any suspicious spots will be discussed with you on the day. If a biopsy or minor procedure is needed, this can often be arranged at the same appointment.

Warning signs vary by skin cancer type. Look out for: a new or changing mole (irregular shape, uneven colour, or growing in size); a sore that does not heal; a pearly or waxy bump (common with basal cell carcinoma); or a rough, scaly patch or raised lump (common with squamous cell carcinoma). If anything on your skin looks different, itches, bleeds, or is simply worrying you, book a check — it is always better to have it looked at.

Dr Gilani diagnoses and treats the three main types of skin cancer: Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) — the most common and slowest-growing; Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) — which can spread to deeper tissue if untreated; and Melanoma — the most serious form. Treatment options include surgical excision, cryotherapy (freezing), and referral to a specialist for complex cases. All treatment plans are tailored to your specific diagnosis.

Absolutely. You don't have to have a full skin check if you only want one specific spot examined. Simply book a standard GP appointment and let the receptionist know you'd like a skin lesion assessment. Dr Gilani will examine the area, advise you on what it is, and recommend next steps — whether that's monitoring, a biopsy, or treatment.

If a biopsy is taken, the tissue sample is sent to a pathology lab and results typically come back within 5–10 business days. Dr Gilani will contact you to discuss the results and any recommended follow-up treatment. You are welcome to call the clinic if you have not heard back within that timeframe.
